Now that's cute

Ok, so that's a plush Linux Tasmanian devil.

It's sitting in a bathtub, because my innate instinct for great photography (Ansel Adams has got nothing on me) made me think that "Hey, I'm in a hotel room in Hobart - and it's exactly like I was in a fancy photography studio if I just put the dang thing into the bath tub".

Very fetching. I think I really "captured" it. Whoever had the idea of dressing up a plush tasmanian devil as the Linux penguin deserves some kind of medal. And the beak only slightly makes me think "snoopy doing his vulture impersonation". Otherwise it's a dead-on penguin.

Right?

hehe lol that looks kinda funny to me.

One should mention the devil is from here: linux.conf.au

They should put a year in their URLs though because if you read this a few months from now the link will point to something else.

I found the tag that is attached to my tuz funny.

"WARNING! Remove all hangtag & plastic tagger."

Not every day that you see Linus in Australia :)

If you ask me, it looks more like a mole with a penguin's beak ;)

What do you think Mols Torvalds ?

Couldn't they make even more psycho versions? Like a horse, but with beak.. Or a spider.. The dressing out thing is hilarious.

And very clever of you - putting it in the bath for a classic photo session. A clean bath as well. You must be staying in a good hotel ;)

You should use this thing as a logo for the unstable Kernel tree.

It's still cute and it does reflect a 'hidden' animal within an animal if you know what I mean.

Tuz is the mascot for linux.conf.au 2009

A limited number of stuffed Tuz' will be on sale somewhere soonish - with proceeds going to the save the tassie devil fund.

Also... tuz will be making a cameo appearance in a kernel near you sometime soon: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stibbons/3216251461/

Linus, you should try KDE 4.2 it has improved ways and it really works. Ditch gnome, kde is better. It always was.

Hey I just saw that RMS has responded to your blog where you called him one issue person.

check out: http://www.efytimes.com/efytimes/31990/news.htm

RMS says something like: "Well, you can see that he is a person who doesn’t believe in freedom. You can tell that from his writings. Why does he reject GPLv3, because GPL3 protects users from tivoization, which is a fairly new method of denying freedom. It did not exist when I wrote GPLv2 or I would have done something about it then."

LOL all comments guys. By the way as a blogger I want to share you guys that Linux is the best operating system in the planet. I use it that I have a freedom to do what ever I want in operating system. Thanks to Torvald's family.

Best regards.

mobile phones price and performance are a pair of contradiction. The word "shanzhai" is very popular in China. It is industry phenomenon of imitation, high quality and low price. Moreover, cell phones are the representative of them. The global financial crisis led to a significant shrinkage of assets for people. "china wholesale" demonstrate the might. most of them would like buy the cheap cell phones now .

hey, I bet you would like this article I read a few months ago (December) in the Communications of the ACM.

This is from a press release..

"Researchers from the University of Tokyo present their efforts to create Plushie, an interactive system that allows non-professional users to design their own original plush toys with concurrent modeling and simulation phases that makes the design process more efficient. In an accompanying technical perspective, the University of Washington’s James A. Landay, a founder of its Design:Use:Build (DUB) Center, notes that these plush toys share many of the important characteristics of other complex design objects. He concludes that this work is important for the future not only of computing but of production as well. "

Basically everybody (the kids) got a lesson in the practical applications of computers in a design project, from start to finish, designing plush toys..

It looked like a lot of fun.

The system looked like something that would map to Linux and the Linux user community very well.. (if it isn't already on Linux, it looked from the screenshots that it might already be- or some other Unix)

Okay, now its a bit later, looking at the web page URL buried in the article, it looks like it's a Java applet -that they claim is Windows only.. but of course, it might well work on other platforms, have to bang on it a bit later on when I have the time-

"We introduce Plushie, an interactive system that allows nonprofessional users to design their own original plush toys. To design a plush toy, one needs to construct an appropriate two-dimensional (2D) pattern. However, it is difficult for non-professional users to appropriately design a 2D pattern. Some recent systems automatically generate a 2D pattern for a given three-dimensional (3D) model, but constructing a 3D model is itself a challenge. Furthermore, an arbitrary 3D model cannot necessarily be realized as a real plush toy, and the final sewn result can be very different from the original 3D model. We avoid this mismatch by constructing appropriate 2D patterns and applying simple physical simulation to it on the fly during 3D modeling. In this way, the model on the screen is always a good approximation of the final sewn result, which makes the design process much more efficient. We use a sketching interface for 3D modeling and also provide various editing operations tailored for plush toy design. Internally, the system constructs a 2D cloth pattern in such a way that the simulation result matches the user's input stroke. Our goal is to show that relatively simple algorithms can provide fast, satisfactory results to the user whereas the pursuit of optimal layout and simulation accuracy lies outside this paper's scope. We successfully demonstrated that non-professional users could design plush toys or balloon easily using Plushie."

I bet it can be made to work- this looks like if you can get a great mix of fun, and practical (for both parents of kids and 'grown up' kids themselves)
