Reading..

It's getting later in the release cycle, so I'm spending more time in my "wait for people to complain" mode, allowing me to read more.

And happily, I found Lois McMaster Bujold. I don't think I've read anything by her before, but picked up The Curse of Chalion and The Hallowed Hunt and read them very happily over the last couple of days.

Now I guess I'll have to go out and buy some more books by her to see if I was just lucky, or whether she just is consistently good.

And judging by reviews on Amazon, it wasn't just me being lucky in the two I picked up.

  1. She's good.

Paladin of Souls is a direct sequel to The Curse of Chalion, you'll probably want to start with that one.

The older Miles Vorkosigan series is SF rather than fantasy, and is immensely enjoyable.

The Spirit Ring was Bujold's first foray into fantasy (rather than SF), and is probably one of her weakest works.

Her newest Sharing Knife series isn't finished yet, you might want to wait a bit. Wait, Wikipedia tells me book four was published this January. Yay!

  2. I love her. I suggest the Vor books. Great SF with a lot of interesting ideas.

  3. Great books. In fact, the ones you've already read are the ones I liked the least (but still enjoyed), so I'll echo the commenters saying "try the rest, they're good too!"

  4. "The Curse of Chalion", "Paladin of Souls" and "Hallowed Hunt" all share the same universe, but are failrly independent. All are good fantasy.

"Miles Vorkosigan" series, starting with "Shards of Honor" and ending (currently) with "Diplomatic Immunity", with a side story "Falling Free" in the same universe (but much earlier chronologically) are thoroughly enjoyable character driven science-fiction space opera.

"The Spirit Ring" is standalone fantasy, in the renaisance with magic setting; I agree with Marius that is one of weaker works, but also quite good.

New "The Sharing Knife" series are also fantasy, with rather interesting universe.

  7. I predict that the release of the Linux kernel will slow down soon if you start reading the Vorkosigan books!
A really addictive serie, I own them all *twice*: once in French and then during a trip to the US I bought them all again to have the original version..

  8. The Sharing Knife is finished as of a month ago. But beware! Unlike all her previous work, these four volumes cannot be read separately - the first two (the romance part) are a single book, and the last two (the world building part) are a single book too and should be read after the first. It was very experimental, both in trying to mix romance and fantasy and in building a fantasy in the American west rather than the more common feudal Europe. I personally liked the Miles romances (Komarr/A Civil Campaign) better, but it's still good.

There is a next Miles book in progress. The Vorkosigan books can(should?) be read in chronological rather than publishing order, but she was more careful to help each stand on its own. They are a lot of fun. She actually knows biology so although it's soft sci-fi and space opera, the ramifications of advances in biology sound more like hard sci-fi. She has a good sense of humor too.

  10. My girlfriend recently introduced me to Bujold and I have to agree that a lot of her work is good. As many others have said before me, the Vor/Miles Vorkosigan series is an excellent series. You never know just where the story is going to go next which is a welcome relief from the typical story flow.

On the other hand, I really wasn't impressed with The Sharing Knife series. Mind you, I'm only two books in but it's not her best work.

Another author to look at when you need one is Robert J Sawyer. Factoring Humanity and the Quintaglio Saga (three book series) are both great reads.

Oh, and since I've never posted here before: Thanks for all the fantastic work on Linux ^_^

  17. Bujold is the only author whose work I buy un-reviewed. She really *is* that good.

The Sharing Knife series has more romance-genre elements/conventions in it than any of her other (previous) works. If the genre is uncomfortable for particular readers, then they probably will not enjoy the TSK: Beguilement and TSK: Legacy.

I never pick up a Bujold book on a day I have an appointment anywhere -- including work :)

  18. Yes! Yes! Yes! I think, The "Barrayar" series is the best of modern sci-fi. And translations to Russian didn't blemish those books.

Now I want to recommend the books written by mr. Terry Pratchett. If you like thin English humor and fantasy parodies.

    Thank you.

  20. I saw where you do not want a standard distribution. I can agree with this, to allow standard setups for different desired computer setups. Print server, web server, desktop, cd-bootable, etc.

What standardization I would like to see is a common install script language. I.E., you get a package and install it with your choice of install programs, but all the install programs read the same install instruction file.

For now, select a set of existing popular install script standards for right now, so that a package can be installed in any package distribution.

For the future pick one install script to be the sole standard. Allow room for additional features to be added to the standard.

  25. The Miles Vorkosigan series is even better. Bujold's sense of humor is great. I read that she started writing after her first kid was born and she was "stuck" at home.

    Enjoy!
